In this extra article, I will share five useful dating tips for first dates.
The background for this blog post which I haven’t planned to write just now was a reaction to a tweet on the blog’s official Twitter account that summarised one of my previous blog posts about first dates.
Someone reached out to me and asked about the non-verbal communication skills, which I haven’t covered in this blog before.
It doesn’t matter whether or not you are dating either on a dating site or in real life, talking or communication is the most crucial thing you need to have when you are dating someone.
Body Language: You Say More Than Just Words
Did you know that most of the communication we humans do is not with words?
Scientific study has revealed that talking is only 7% of what you communicate with another human being.
Most of it is body language and other forms of “silent” communication that is the things you don’t say (Source: Wikipedia).
The Eyes Are The Mirror of Your Soul
Our eyes are the most important sense we use.
A stunning 83% is based upon how we perceive someone with our sight.
How someone smells, on the other hand, only makes up about 3 %.
For this reason, it might not be a big surprise to you that it only takes 1/10 of a second to make a first impression of someone.
Eyes are also important for a mutual gaze.
The more intense someone will look at you, the higher the level of attraction will be.
Your Touch Is Important Too
If a person does not respond to this non-verbal act, or if he or she is touching you, the best thing to do is to wait for the other person to respond.
Gestures, distance, and clothes might differ between cultures, so if you are dating on an international dating site, such as xpdating.com, you have to be aware of that.
It might be rude to look someone in their eyes in one culture.

Dating Tips #1: Take a Look at Yourself
It is always advisable to take a good look at yourself first and go through a small checklist to make sure that you look your best, especially if you are going out on a first date with someone you never met before.
I don’t mean to patronize you here, just giving you some useful tips.
Here’s my short checklist:
- Brush your teeth
- Comb your hair
- Shave your legs or beard
- Cut your hair or beard if necessary.
- Put on a new set of clothes and underwear.
By following this simple checklist, you will avoid a lot of mistakes that especially newbies make on first dates.
Dating Tips #2: What Your Clothes “Says” About You
Be aware of what you are wearing on a first date since it communicates your mood, your emotions, and what your expectations are for this date.
It will also communicate your values and beliefs to someone else.
It is essential to be aware of since you don’t want to send any signals unintentionally that makes a person perceive you differently than the way he or she are supposed to.
Here are my seven best tips for what you could wear on first dates.
Admittedly, it is quite conservative tips, but it’s better to be safe than sorry since if your clothes are sending someone the “wrong” signals might lead you into quite a threatening situation, especially if you are a woman.
Dating Tips #3: Be Aware of Cultural Differences
If you want the person you are dating to be attracted to you, look at him or her deeply in the eyes and wait for a reaction.
The eyes are the mirror of the soul, right?
Yes and no, because there might be some tell-tale signs whether he or she likes you or not that you need to be aware of.
If the person does not look deeply into your eyes, he or she is not giving you a positive response if you are dating a Western woman because in some cultures this can be seen as rude or a sign of modesty, especially for women.
Otherwise: you just got a non-verbal confirmation from that person that he or she likes you too.

Dating Tips #4: Do You Have The Right Touch?
Touching is also a non-verbal communication method as well as gestures.
Gestures say just as much about who you are as what you expect of the date and the person you are dating.
In some cultures, gestures should be used sparsely, and in other cultures, it is socially acceptable to have broad gestures and to use a lot of them to communicate that you are engaged in the person.
If you are dating someone from Scandinavia, use gestures conservatively but use a lot of them if you are dating someone from Southern Europe.
Dating Tips #5: Keep Your Distance Or Don’t
Should you keep your distance as a sign of respect or shouldn’t you?
It is a tricky one since different cultures answer this question quite differently.
If you are dating someone from Europe, for instance, keeping your distance is a sign of respect for the personal integrity of that person.
Unless you are dating someone from Italy because then keeping your distance just means that you are disrespectful.
The same is valid for Asian and Middle-Eastern male or female.
