In this blog post, I will discuss a topic that I am somewhat familiar with myself but that I also know is a big issue in many cultures and ethnical groups: Intercontinental dating is what I like to call it but you might know of it as intercultural dating or interracial dating.

I will object to the use of the term “race” for theological reasons when it comes to human beings but I do know that this is the phrase most people are using throughout the world (I’ve checked with Google and you can do it too if you don’t believe me) and for that reason I will use it.

I prefer to call it intercontinental dating or intercultural dating depending on what you mean. If you are dating someone from another culture, it’s intercultural dating but if that person is living on a different continent, it’s intercultural dating.

They can both mean the same thing but they might also be quite different since intercultural dating might be in the same country that you live in, while intercontinental always is that you’re dating people on a different continent that you yourself currently live on.

There is one undoubted fact that no one can deny when it comes to humanity: We do look different, depending on which continent and which country our parents or we originally came from. In many countries, there might even be different ethnical groups within the same country.

However, from a theological point, we do have the same ancestors, no matter how we look we are all descendants of Adam and Eve but as written above I will use the term “interracial dating” so most people will know what I mean.

Interracial Dating Is Great

I have myself done some real “interracial dating” when I’ve dated in the past. I have dated people from different continents and other cultures than myself and have found it quite interesting.

The Internet opens the doors for more people to find their love in different countries and different cultures now than ever before. Many people find their love in a way that wasn’t possible to find only one generation ago. Our parents didn’t have the multitude of dating sites to choose from as we have today.

Let me tell you why I think that it is great with “interracial dating” now: Because it opens up more chances and possibilities for someone that would have a hard time finding someone to love before.

As always, you have to make up your own mind if this is for me. My own experience with this was a definitive yes because I think it’s exciting to learn about new cultures, meeting new people and I also think it prevents you from being too narrow-minded” of the order of things and how they should be and what is “right” or “wrong” to think.

But Interracial Dating Is Also Trickier

Interracial dating is a bit trickier since you do contact people with a different cultural framework than your own so you have to talk about things that aren’t specific to your culture and you can’t expect the other person to understand what you are speaking about the entire time.

The great thing with the export of American and British series is that it can give you and the other person a bit of the same framework that you can talk about if you’re dating outside of your culture (and maybe also your religion).

If you have the same faith, you have the same framework and also the same understanding of how things should be perceived since the religious experiences are shared amongst us that are confessing Jesus Christ as the Saviour of all humanity, no matter of gender or where we live in the world.

For me “interracial dating” is celebrating God’s creation in all it’s glory, in all its grace and in the spirit of love that is the New Testament’s main reason.

Next blog post

My next blog post will be published on December, 20th 2015.

It will be about why it’s not good for anyone to be alone.

See you then,
Rickard
