Love Is Greater Than Hate

When I first received the news, on Friday the 7th of April 2017, I was shocked and in disbelief first.

I watched the Swedish television and opened up Chi Rho Dating’s official Twitter account to get some eyewitness accounts in Swedish.

Later on that night, the hashtags #PrayForSweden and #openstockholm were launched and I used them to express my personal condolences and I could also read a lot of wonderful and heartwarming stories from Stockholm about how everybody, even complete strangers found themselves opening up their homes, offering tourists and natives alike, someone to discuss what happened with and a couch to sleep on.

When I write this article, it is not known if it was a planned attack or someone who took advantage of the fact that the lorry driver was unloading his goods into a restaurant when it was hijacked. It drove along the central street named Drottninggatan (Queen’s street) for about 500 meters before it ran into a perfumery in a department store further down the street. This street is the same street where a terrorist killed himself in a failed terrorist attack during Christmas 2010.

Luckily, the lorry driver wasn’t seriously injured but was rammed by the hijacker with the lorry when he tried to stop the hijacking of the truck. According to the brewery owner, he was shocked and has been taken care of by the staff at the restaurant as well as his employer.

The subway, local bus lines, and trains were all closed down in the aftermath of that event. This was lifted during the night. The Swedish police held two press conferences to inform the public and the Swedish prime minister returned from a political conference in Gothenburg to Stockholm. During one of the press conferences, the police published a picture of someone who they wanted to get in contact with.

Later on that night, Swedish police apprehended a suspect in Märsta, a suburb of Stockholm, who has been interrogated. A 39-year-old man was apprehended and it has recently been confirmed that he is the person on the pictures that were published by the police, earlier this night.

The 39-year-old man is of Uzbek nationality and has previously been under surveillance by the Swedish police before but has been dismissed from the list of people who might pose a threat to Swedish society which was confirmed at a press conference by the police on Saturday afternoon. He has got a public defender for the upcoming trial. This is what is known and has been confirmed through Swedish broadcasting or mainstream media on Sunday afternoon.

It has now been confirmed that it was a terrorist attack and that the suspect had applied for a permanent residenceship in 2014 but was rejected in 2016. 4 people are confirmed dead, one British citizen, one Belgian citizen and two Swdish citizens, one of them were a 11 year old girl. Around 2 AM (Local time on Saturday) the lorry was salvaged from the department store and moved to an unknown location for forensic examination.

“We must never let hate prevail”, the Swedish PM said during his press conference on Friday and I can only concur with his analysis at this moment. Churches has been opened for people who want to contact a minister or light a candle and hospitals has prepared to take care of the wounded.

The Best Vaccine Against Hate and Intolerance

I published a tweet later on the night that was retweeted and liked by a lot of native Swedes and others as well:

[Tweet “#openstockholm #prayforsweden: “The best vaccine against hate and ignorance is #love and openness.” (please retweet if you agree)”]

If you want, you are more than welcome to retweet this tweet. If you want to link to this article instead, you can do so by sharing this Tweet: [Tweet “The Stockholm Incident https://chirhodating.com/special-post-the-stockholm-incident #PrayForSweden #stockholmattack”]

I also downloaded the picture you can see above to show my support for my country. Luckily for me, I don’t live in Stockholm, so I was not affected by this incident personally but of course, mentally. For this reason, I thought I would gather all my thoughts and write this article.

A prayer:

God, let Your light shine for everybody affected by this incident and let us not succumb to hate but to build trust and love among us.

In the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
