Introduction
In this blog post, the entire team will explain why we celebrate the Feast of Epiphany.
First, we will discuss the meaning of the word “epiphany”. After that, we will discuss why we celebrate it. So, let’s begin…
What Does Epiphany Mean?
Epiphany comes from the Greek word epiphaneia and means manifestation or striking appearance.
The verb epiphaeo from which this word derives is used to as a divine manifestation to the worshipper of that particular deity in the classic Greek (Attic) and in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament, circa 200 B.C) it means the manifestation of God in 2 Maccabees 15:27.
In the New Testament, it refers to the Second Coming of Jesus, the birth of Jesus Christ (in Bethlehem, see 1 Timothy 1:10), or the appearance after his resurrection.
So what or who is manifested on this day?
The answer is, of course, the Savior of humanity, Jesus Christ.
Epiphany January
We can really say Epiphany in January since it is celebrated in both Western and Eastern Christianity, but not on the same day.
In Western tradition, we celebrate the arrival of the Magi or Wise Men on the 6th of January, while in the Eastern tradition, they celebrate the baptism of Jesus on the 19th of January.
We celebrate this holiday on different days because we follow different calendars.
In the Eastern Churches, they follow the old Julian calendar (established by Julius Caesar, the famous Roman emperor) in 46 B.C., while we in the West follow the Gregorian calendar (named after Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in 1582).
In the East, they focus on Christ’s baptism and his shining manifestation of God as the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, while in the West, we focus on the wise men, and some churches also focus on missionary work on this day.
