In this short blog post, we will discuss why we celebrate Ascension Day which is celebrated 40 days after Easter Day.

Why We Celebrate Ascension Day

In the Apostolic Creed, we confess that we believe not only that Christ rose from the dead but also that “he ascended into heaven”.

This is also the reason why we celebrate Ascension Day today (Acts 1:3).

The ascension is an integral part of the faith and has been so since the apostles witnessed Jesus ascension to his Father into the heaven, just as they have witnessed when Jesus talked with Elijah and Moses once.

Exactly as those prophets, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour of all humanity ascended with both his body and spirit into heaven.

This is also a feast that is celebrated ecumenical, which is throughout the entire spectrum of Christian churches and denominations in the World. The Latin term Ascensio implies that Jesus ascended by his own powers.

The apostles were also given a new promise since Jesus has promised to always be with them until the end of time (Matthew 28:18-20).

He promised that he would send a helper which the church always have identified as the Holy Spirit and this will be firmly discussed when we celebrate Pentecost later this month.

A Short Prayer

God,

Thank You For Sending Your Son So That I Can Live,

No Longer As A Wretched Person But As A Good Person,

Saved From All My Sins, Cleansed Through His Blood Alone,

Once And For All Eternity.

Thank You For Allowing Me To Celebrate His Ascension Today,

So That I, When He Returns Might Ascend To Receive Your Righteous Verdict,

Then Remember Me Not For What I Have Done,

But What Christ Has Done For Me.

Amen.
