Is April The Month To Be Foolish Or To Fool Around? Neither, As It Turns Out!

The Fool’s Day – A Medieval Tradition

According to most sources, we found online (or at least the ones we could read without translation), it is a medieval tradition that might trace its roots back to a Roman festival called Hilaria. There was, however, nothing hilarious about that religious festival.

In medieval Europe, however, people started to make practical jokes as a festive event, probably because people that celebrated New Year’s Eve on January 1st made fun of those that didn’t.

The Fool’s Day – Modern-Day Traditions

The celebration of April Fool’s Day looks a bit different in countries around the World.

In Italy, France, French-speaking areas of Canada and Switzerland, and Belgium, they eat fish. In Scandinavia, the newspapers make fake headlines and put them in front of the first page. In Poland, serious activities are banned this day.

A question that pops up is: Do the Polish people take Fool’s Day seriously, or don’t they want to make fools of themselves? We honestly don’t know, but it indeed could have fooled us.

In the United Kingdom, they reveal an April fool by shouting, “April’s fool!” In Ireland, they pass around a letter containing the text “send the fool further.”

The tradition from the United Kingdom has also spread to Scandinavia, where people do the same thing on school grounds, workplaces, and public places.
