Depression, Anxiety and Negative Emotions

Depression and anxiety are two of the worst emotions and states of mind that you can experience as a human being.

It makes you passive, make everything feel hopeless and even the simplest task becomes overwhelming. I know this, from my own personal experience.

Prayer does help as well as filling your life with positive things in your life, things that matter to you and spending quality time with your friends and family members. Exercising helps too.

When might you experience these feelings?

You may experience it when you feel that you have hit the lowest point of your life that these things really matter.

If you have been dating for a while you might start to second-guess yourself and get overwhelmed by negative emotions if you haven’t found “the one” as fast as you thought when you began your dating journey.

As you probably know, I try to keep a positive tone in all my articles.

Because dating is supposed to be a positive experience but sometimes it is not and it can be both frightening and uncomfortable from time to time.

You probably also know, especially if you have been reading this blog for a while, that I try to not involve my own experiences and keep my articles as an overview or a 10,000-foot view of the different aspects of dating that I am discussing.

I do occasionally change my approach and discuss my own experiences, especially when I am reviewing products but seldom when I write other kinds of articles.

In this article, which is not a review, I decided to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone a bit and actually become more personal than I normally am in my articles.

The topic I discuss today is a very serious matter.

I do think that everybody has experienced negative emotions, especially when we are facing something we never did before or something we don’t feel comfortable with from the beginning.

When it is over, we become relieved and think that it wasn’t too bad and then we tend to forget of the whole experience.

I do think most of my readers have experienced this.

I know that I certainly have done it. It’s just a part of being human, right?

The next thing I will discuss is something I do have experience with as well and that is called depression.

More Than 300 Million People Worldwide Suffer from Depression

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression.

Some people are misdiagnosed and mistreated due to this illness.

It is calculated that 2/3 of all Americans, in the United States alone, who suffers from this mental illness is not actively seeking medical assistance.

The WHO, which is a part of the United Nations (UN) has in a report published back in 2018, also predicted that depression will be the most common disability worldwide by the year 2030.

There are many things that may cause depression and it is also a known fact that more women than men suffer from this illness.

Here are some key factors that might cause depression:

  • Drug abuse
  • Childbirth
  • Menopause
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Seasonal variations
  • Bipolar disorder

For the full list of what factors that may cause depression in an individual, please read this article on Wikipedia.

I can tell you that for me, I always feel some hopelessness in the autumn and also in the spring, so it is seasonal and a very mild form thereof.

When I feel that way, the things I normally like to do becomes less fun and I might lose interest in doing them temporarily but I also feel reluctant to do things and often procrastinate.

This article, for instance, took me more than a week to write.

I normally write an article in a couple of hours, depending on how much research I need to do.

Some of the topics I discuss need more research than others.

This topic is probably one of the most demanding articles that I have written, not only based on the fact that it discusses something that affects me personally as well as a lot of research.

The most severe cases of depression may lead to suicide and I thank God that I am not having such thoughts, even remotely.

I will now finish this article by discussing anxiety, something I don’t suffer from personally but is just as severe as the worst case of depression.

Anxiety Is Similar to Depression

Anxiety can be caused by almost the same factors as depression with one exception: It is not seasonal.

But as the German-American theologian Paul Tillich proved that anxiety might be of spiritual nature and not only of a sociological, psychological or medically induced nature. It is based on our very being.

The first one to discuss this concept was the Danish philosopher Søren Aalby Kirkegaard back in 1844 in his book Begrebet Angest (Concept of Anxiety).

The German word Angst can be rendered as anxiety or mood of deep anxiety.

I am not discussing the anxiety everybody can feel from time to time, especially when we are faced with something we fear but rather a more profound anxiety that might question your core foundations as a human being.

It is basically the being’s awareness of death.

I am aware that you can use the word angst in English as well but I feel that the German word has an existential underpinning that the English word lacks.

This is something I discussed in the article about the stress singles might experience from time to time.

Do You Suffer from Depression or Anxiety?

If you or someone close to you suffer from depression or anxiety, I advise you to seek professional assistance.

Consult with your doctor or psychiatric clinic for more guidance.

I can not help you with this myself since I am not a trained professional in neither medicine nor psychiatry.

Next Article

My next article will be published on Monday the 30th of April.

It will discuss what Christian Dating International and Chi Rho Dating will do to fight these illnesses as well as how you can contribute to this fight.

Take care,

Rickard
