I used to think my body was just being difficult before and during my period.

One day, I wanted something warm and comforting. Another day, I wanted chocolate. Then suddenly I would crave something fresh, like berries or yogurt. For a long time, I treated those cravings like a problem.

But over time, I started looking at it differently.

Maybe my body wasn’t working against me. Maybe it was asking for different kinds of support at different times of the month.

That is where foods for the menstrual phase can be helpful.

The idea isn’t to follow a perfect diet or obsess over every bite. It is simply about choosing foods that may help you feel more nourished, balanced, and comfortable during your menstrual phase.

What Are Menstrual Phase Foods?

Menstrual phase foods are foods people often choose during menstruation to support energy, comfort, cravings, and overall well-being.

During this phase, many women experience things like:

  • Lower energy
  • Cramps
  • Mood changes
  • Chocolate cravings
  • Bloating
  • Stronger hunger signals

That doesn’t mean you need a strict meal plan.

It simply means you may benefit from meals and snacks that feel nourishing, satisfying, and easy on your body.

One thing I’ve learned is that our nutritional needs don’t necessarily stay the same throughout the month. While I don’t believe you need a completely different diet for every phase of your cycle, I have noticed that I naturally enjoy different foods at different times. Here’s how I personally approach each phase.

Why Food Choices May Matter During Your Menstrual Phase

Researchers have increasingly explored how nutritional needs may change throughout different phases of the menstrual cycle. A recent review highlighted nutrients such as iron, vitamin C, and magnesium as potentially important during the menstrual phase and pointed to foods like dark chocolate, nuts, seeds, avocados, and leafy greens as valuable dietary choices.

While no single food is a magic solution, choosing nourishing foods may help support overall well-being during your cycle.

15 Menstrual Phase Food Ideas

1. Dark Chocolate

Let’s start with the obvious one.

Dark chocolate can feel comforting, rich, and satisfying when cravings appear. I like that it gives you that chocolate taste without needing a huge amount.

2. Berries

Berries are one of my favorite foods during this phase because they feel light, fresh, and naturally sweet.

They work beautifully with yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, or even a little dark chocolate.

3. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is simple, creamy, and easy to turn into a satisfying bowl.

Add berries, crushed nuts, honey, or a few pieces of dark chocolate, and you have something that feels like comfort food without feeling heavy.

I personally love Greek yogurt, because it reminds me of ice cream with the same great taste but without all the unnecessary calories. It’s one of my favorite breakfasts.

4. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are easy to add to breakfast bowls, salads, smoothies, and snacks.

Walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and chia seeds can make a meal feel more filling and balanced.

5. Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like spinach and kale may not be the first thing you crave during your period, but they can be a helpful part of your meals.

I like them best when they are added to something warm, like eggs, soup, or a simple dinner bowl.

6. Avocado

Avocado is soft, filling, and easy to pair with other foods.

Try it with eggs, toast, salmon, or a simple rice bowl.

7. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of those foods that just feels gentle.

It is warm, comforting, and easy to customize. Add berries, cinnamon, nuts, or a small amount of dark chocolate for a more indulgent option.

Salmon can be a great choice when you want something nourishing and satisfying.

Pair it with sweet potatoes, rice, leafy greens, or roasted vegetables.

10. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes feel like comfort food, but they also fit beautifully into a balanced meal.

I like them roasted with a little olive oil and served with protein and greens.

11. Lentils

Lentils are filling, budget-friendly, and easy to use in soups, stews, and bowls.

They are especially useful when you want something warm and hearty.

12. Bananas

Bananas are simple and convenient.

They pair well with oatmeal, yogurt, peanut butter, smoothies, or even a few pieces of dark chocolate.

13. Herbal Tea

Sometimes comfort comes from what you drink, not just what you eat.

A warm cup of herbal tea can feel calming during the menstrual phase, especially in the evening.

14. Soup

Soup is one of my favorite comfort meals during this time of the month.

It is warm, easy to digest, and simple to fill with vegetables, protein, herbs, and grains.

15. Water-Rich Fruits

Fruits like oranges, watermelon, and strawberries can be refreshing when you’re bloated or heavy.

They also make it easier to enjoy something sweet without reaching only for candy or processed snacks.

My Favorite Menstrual Phase Food Combination

If I had to choose one simple combination, I would probably pick:

Greek yogurt, berries, crushed walnuts, a drizzle of honey, and a few pieces of dark chocolate.

It feels comforting, sweet, creamy, and satisfying without making me feel like I have abandoned my healthy habits.

That is what I like about this approach.

It is not about restriction.

It is about learning to work with your body rather than fight it.

Most influencers on Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms have their own list of foods to avoid during their period. But what works for them may not work for you or me, which is exactly why I wrote about what I personally eat instead.

I don’t believe in forbidding certain foods; I believe in conscious, deliberate efforts to reduce calorie intake, and that’s why I think that chocolate might actually help you lose weight.

Final Thoughts

Menstrual phase foods do not need to be complicated.

You do not need a perfect plan, expensive ingredients, or a long list of rules.

Start with simple foods that help you feel nourished, satisfied, and supported.

And if chocolate is part of that sometimes?

Well, darlin’, I don’t think that makes you weak.

I think it makes you human.
