It is not hard to avoid falling into it.
As with everything when we are talking with people, you have to make a quick decision: Is it suitable or not to make a joke about something related to this?
You have to make up your mind right at that very moment.
It is one of the trickier parts of dating. Hence, it is easy to fall into “the fun guy trap” unless you feel it is the right time.
Here are five recommendations of jokes you should avoid if you want to use humor as an icebreaker:
- Don’t joke about politics
- Don’t joke about something local (if you are talking with someone from the area where you live)
- Don’t joke about religion (it can be not very respectful to your date)
- Don’t joke about the S-word (you know, the one that ends with an “x”)
- Don’t joke about your dates (like their culture, hair color, etc.)
Good advice is to look at humor websites that you can look up and memorize before you start a chat with someone new to get inspiration and maybe learn some new jokes too.
Another general thing is, of course, to not make jokes about everything. You should be serious too.
There is a delicate balance between being too funny and too severe, and the best thing is to mix both serious topics with lighter ones.
It will only get annoying if you’re making jokes the entire time.
My best advice is to mix it up by asking her one of these questions to get to know her better.
Sometimes Humour Is a Cultural Thing
Humour can be a cultural thing too.
Some people might not get it or laugh at the wrong place when you’re telling a joke because they do not have the same cultural setting as you do.
Other times they will not understand what is funny.

Avoiding the fun guy trap is easy if you know the funny things to say to her in a text or when you’re out on a date which will help position you as someone she can relax around.
